Gli scritti di Wolfang Sachs dal 1997 al 2001 compongono questo testo, uno dei suoi pochi tradotti in italiano. Pur trattandosi dunque di testi un pò datati (si arriva a parlare della preparazione del summit di Joannesburg), il tema centrale è di assoluta attualità e lungimiranza: si affronta l'intreccio tra la giustizia sociale (equità ridistributiva nello spazio, sul pianeta di oggi) e la sostenibilità ambientale (equità ridistributiva nel tempo, verso le future generazioni) dimostrandone l'assoluta inscindibilità, l'impossibilità di perseguire una sola di queste sfide, a scapito dell'altra.
Con uno stile letterario ecclettico (ora tecnico, ora sociologico, ora ecologico), vengono espressi concetti intorno alle contraddizioni della globalizzazione a partire dalla metafora dell'immagine del pianeta azzurro e delle sue ambivalenze di valori e significati.
Il libro non manca di esprimere indirizzi e suggerimenti per alcuni aspetti profetici, mi hanno colpito in particolare:
- la decostruzione e smitizzazione del concetto di "sviluppo" sostenibile, quale ossimoro concettuale utile solo a procrastinare di poco la catastrofe;
- l'insufficienza della tecnologia, della eco-efficienza da sola, per la soluzione dei problemi di oggi;
- il concetto di un benessere basato sulla sufficienza e sul "limite", che si nutre di relazioni e non di oggetti.
Si tenga conto che queste cose insieme agli altri "cavalieri del dopo-sviluppo" (Latouche, Illich, Shiva), Sachs le pensava, le diceva e le scriveva fin nel secolo scorso.....
